Scholar to discuss Frankenstein and childhood in Bates College lecture

Marshall Brown, professor of English and comparative literature at Washington University, gives a talk titled Frankenstein: A Child’s Story at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, in Chase Hall Lounge, Bates College, Campus Avenue. The public is welcome to attend free of charge.

Brown will discuss Mary Shelley’s famous horror novel Frankenstein, first published in 1818. Drawing upon a forthcoming book on Gothic fiction, Brown will focus particularly on the idea of childhood.

Brown’s books include The Shape of German Romanticism (Cornell University Press, 1979), Preromanticism (Stanford University Press, 1991) and Turning Points: Essays in the History of Cultural Expressions (Stanford University Press, 1997). He has edited Modern Language Quarterly since 1990.
