RA MEETING MINUTES

In accordance with the Bates College Student Government Bylaws

(Article I, Section 4)

Sunday, November 16th, 2014 4:00pm-5:30PM | Meeting Room: Commons 221

  1. Announcements 
    1. This week, as Tomás Jurgensen (Chair) and Katharina Harling (Secretary) attended a NESCAC Student Government Conference at Hamilton College, Jake Barbato stood in for the Chair of the RA, and Madeline Bruno stood in for the Secretary of the RA.
    2. Alyssa asked the members of the RA to refrain from using laptops during future meetings, as members should be fully present at all meetings. All legislation in review would be printed out before meetings.
    3. Alyssa introduced Qui Fogarty, the coordinator of student activity and liaison between student government and the administration. Qui spoke about her goal to become a more active advisor to both parties, as well as an advocate for the student body and student government when in discussion with the dean of student office.
  2. Ratification of Minutes
    1. Vote; For: all. Against: 0. Abstaining: 0. Minutes ratified.
  3. Committee Reports
    1. Treasurer (John Stansel ‘15)-
      1. TedX – The event, which occurred on November 8th, was an overwhelming success. However, the club failed to ask for a club sponsorship in time. The budget committee voted in favor of reimbursing the club for $350, even though the club asked for $510.
        1. Vote; For: 22. Against: 2. Abstaining: 0. Passes.
      2. OUTFront – The organization requested $865 to fund their National Aids Day events. The asked for funds will cover the cost of screening Dallas Buyers Club, folders and labels for test results, and candles for a candlelight vigil. The Budget Committee voted to give OUTFront $390 to cover these costs.
        1. Vote; For: All. Against: 0. Abstaining: 0. Passes.
      3. BCSG Budget – The RA voted to pass the proposed BCSG budget for the year, which consists of $100 for TurboVote voter registration, $6,558.75 for Lost Valley with the promise of free admission for all Bates students with ID, and $100 for RA members to use when traveling to conferences in the future.
        1. Vote; For: 23. Against: 1. Abstaining: 0. Passes.
    2. Vice President of Student Clubs (Paul Fourgous ‘15)-
      1. Women’s Club Lacrosse – This club sport will not be gender exclusive, despite the name. The club will begin with a budget of $2000, but this is expected to decrease over the years. The team will attend games and tournaments outside of Bates.
        1. Vote; For: All. Against: 0. Abstaining: 0. Passes.
  4. Committee Reports
    1. It’s On Us – This week the Committee will be tabling in Commons to get students to sign the pledge, and is looking for RA members to help man tables. The committee is also holding an town hall style forum about issues surrounding sexual assault in general, and specifically at Bates as well.
    2. Health Survey Committee – Alyssa reminded the RA that members are encouraged to volunteer for the Ad Hoc committee, which will be created over Thanksgiving break and will begin work when we return.
