Curriculum

Since the founding of Bates College in 1855, the academic curriculum has continually evolved under the expertise of the Bates Faculty, allowing the college to fulfill its mission of providing an exceptional undergraduate liberal arts education. A Curricular Timeline of Bates College illuminates various highlights.

Department and Program Curricula

  • Propose Changes Major or Minor Requirements: Use this form to submit changes to your major or minor curriculum by March 15 for the following academic year. The AAC will review your request and respond by April 1st.
  • Course and Catalog Management – The Registrar’s Office maintains software, known as Coursedog, to create and maintain both courses in the curriculum as well as department/program descriptions and major/minor requirements in the Bates Catalog. The Curriculum Review Committee and the Registrar’s Office coordinate to ensure proposed new courses are reviewed and appropriate changes to the curriculum are made in the Bates Catalog
  • Program Planning – The Dean of Faculty Office annually provides a Program Planner to each academic unit to support the creation of their offerings in the year to come. Program Planners are provided at the annual August Chair’s retreat and utilized during fall Chair’s meetings during grid work sessions.

Study Abroad

  • Fall Semester Abroad: The Fall Semester Abroad (FSA) programs provide an exceptional opportunity to teach and work with students overseas.
  • Off Campus Short Term: These courses provide excellent opportunities for faculty and students to work together off-campus, away from the temptations of Short Term campus life.
