Electoral Engagement: Sociological Perspectives and Higher Education’s Responsibilities

(Professor Emily W. Kane) This Zoom presentation/conversation will begin with a brief overview of some patterns sociologists explore in relation to systemic inequalities in access to voting and representation in US electoral politics, as well as a brief video framing higher education’s responsibilities in relation to encouraging student electoral engagement. Then we’ll discuss these topics informally, focusing on whatever participants find most compelling. Topics might include systemic inequalities in voter access in the current US election as well as questions about Bates’ efforts to support student political engagement, in voting but also in more direct action both on campus and beyond.  October 29th, 2020, 7-8pm.
