Catalog Blocks
The Catalog Course Listing, Catalog Department Overview, and Catalog Program Listing blocks are Bates-specific features that allow site managers to efficiently pull accurate academic information directly from the Bates Catalog to incorporate into a site. Overall, these blocks make adding course, program, and department information easier for site managers, and ensure consistency across Bates websites.
General Tutorial
Inserting a Block
In the blank area (where you want to place the block), type the forward slash (/). This will open the Block Inserter menu, giving you a quick way to access different blocks.
Next, start typing “Catalog.” As you type, WordPress will show a list of blocks that match your input. You should see three options appear in the dropdown list: Catalog Course Listing, Catalog Department Overview, and Catalog Program Listing. Simply click the title of the block you would like to insert.
Adding a Department Code
Each catalog block requires the user to enter a department code. The Catalog Program Listing block also requires the user to enter a program name. For help entering the program name, scroll to the Catalog Program Listing portion of this post.
Once you have successfully inserted the block, a box will appear prompting you to enter the department / subject code. Each department at Bates has a unique code, such as “DCS.”
To find the code for a specific department or subject, visit the Bates Academic Catalog. Next, navigate to the department page, and select Courses. The code is the combination of letters that appears before the numeric portion of each course listing.
Finally, enter this code in the text box.
Catalog Course Listing
The Catalog Course Listing block allows the user to insert a list of all courses currently being offered in any individual department. This block contains information for all Bates departments, and displays a neat list of each course code, name, and its description.

Catalog Department Overview
The Catalog Department Overview block allows site managers to insert a descriptive overview of any department/program at Bates, along with a list of its professors, and all specific programs offered.
The Catalog Department Overview allows users to efficiently insert all important information for any individual department onto their site, including its requirements, and skills and competencies students are expected to gain. It also includes links to each specific program offered within that department, as well as a button that allows readers to navigate to the Full Catalog Listing.

Full Catalog ListingCatalog Program Listing
The Catalog Program Listing block allows users to insert a detailed and organized list of all specific courses and electives required to complete a specific Major or Minor.
Adding a Program Name
In addition to the department code, the Catalog Program Listing block requires you to enter a program name.
Each program has a specific name, which consists of the full department name, such as “Digital and Computational Studies,” followed by either “Major” or “Minor.”
To use this specific block, you must begin by first typing in the program name exactly as it is listed in the Bates Academic Catalog, followed by either “Major” or “Minor.” Any typos will result in the block not working properly.
Next, only once the program name is entered correctly, enter the department code in the text box to the left of the block. For help finding the department code, scroll to the “General Tutorial” section at the top of this post.
As you begin to type the department code, the corresponding Program Listing will load automatically onto your site.
