Like sands through the hourglass, so are the final days of the renovation of Hedge and Roger Williams halls. On Monday, June 27, faculty in philosophy, religious studies and environmental studies will receive key-card access to the renovated Hedge Hall and be able to start settling into their spiffy new offices. Four weeks later, July 25 is moving day for staff of the Language Resource Center and Off-Campus Study office and the faculty of the foreign-language programs that will occupy Roger Williams Hall.

On May 5, workers used a crane to remove the copper cupola from the turret at the southeast corner of the College Chapel. One at a time, the building's four cupolas will be refurbished at the site and replaced as part of the renovation, which also entails extensive work on exterior masonry and the replacement of the roof covering. The cupola is about 14 feet tall and weighs roughly a quarter of a ton, says project manager Greg Hogan.

Like cars and telephones, buildings are catching up rapidly to their human masters in the realm of intelligence. The renovated Roger Williams and Hedge halls, for instance, will wisely empower their occupants to stay comfortable without wasting energy.

A little more than a year after its beginning, the renovation of Hedge and Roger Williams halls is at its peak. That's speaking numerically, at least. The counts of both subcontracting firms and workers on site will top out during the next few weeks, according to project manager Paul Farnsworth. The number of "subs," as construction folk call 'em, under lead contractor Wright-Ryan Construction will be up to 19 or so. And about 90 workers will be swinging hammers, slinging slate and stringing cables.

If a contractor told us that it was time to flood our ceiling, we would take exception. For one thing, it would make a big mess. For another, we can flood our own ceiling, thank you, and often have.

The renovation of Hedge and Roger Williams halls boasts a long list of environmentally sustainable measures. Discarded wood, for example, was chipped by the ton and burned as biomass fuel (with any nails left in the wood being picked up by magnets so the metal could be reused). But not all the old wood went up in smoke. Some will come back to Hedge and the Bill in the coming weeks.

Captivated by the details of steel, drywall and bricks, as we often are, it's easy to lose sight of the fact that the renovation of Hedge and Roger Williams halls is not actually the most important activity involving these buildings. What really matters, of course, is what people do in a building during those long intervals between construction projects.
