Dale Chapman completed his PhD in Musicology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He teaches courses in jazz history, popular music, and African-American music. His research has focused upon the cultural and political significance of musical style, examining the means through which genres such as jazz, techno, and hip hop produce social meanings in the act of performance. His articles have appeared in ECHO: a music-centered journal, and in Playing Changes: New Jazz Studies, an essay collection edited by Robert Walser, forthcoming with Duke University Press.
