No-cost extensions of federal awards may sometimes be requested. However, the PI must request the extension from the funding agency at least 45 days prior to the grant's termination date. Extensions of federal awards are typically submitted through the funding agency’s on-line grants management system, which forwards the request to submit to an authorized sponsored research officer (SRO) in the CFR office. The SRO is responsible for internal approval and final submission of such requests to the funding agency.
