I wish we were asking how SHOULD rather than how do we contribute to this, and my comment/suggestion is that we should consider this our first priority in all faculty review processes. We contribute to the development and lives of our students through our teaching, of course, and also our advising (thesis and more generally) and mentorship to individual students, our support for their collective work through co- and extra-curricular activities (of a wide variety of types), and through the sometimes invisible labor of recognizing and supporting the agency, creativity and resilience of students less well served by our campus culture and structures.
