It was discovered that Frank Coffinhad been on the football squad at Lewiston High School and at Bates as a freshman and sophomore which, together with his illustrious career since graduation, qualified him to receive the Distinguished American Award of the State of Maine Chapter of the National Football College Hall of Fame at its annual scholar-athlete award dinner held at Bowdoin College…. Joining the ranks of classmates who have celebrated fifty years of marriage, Cleo and Norman Dickwent on a cruise through the Hawaiian Islands on the USS Constitution last January. Lt. Col. Dick, ret., spent thirty-six years in the U.S. Air Force, serving eight years on active duty, then being in the reserves. He has also been with the California Department of Transportation for thirty-two years and serves on the Redlands Parks Commission.

Congratulations to all!…John Cole retired from his Florida medical practice and is busy with retirement life. He anticipated a trip to Alaska last spring before they went to South Harpswell, Maine, for the summer…. In Auburn, Maine,Pat Durgin Cottle has enjoyed the company of a grandson while he attended Edward Little High School…. Martha, the daughter of Class Presidents Stan and Madeleine Richard Freeman, recently edited the book Always Rachel, a collection of correspondence between Rachel Carson and Stan’s mother, Dorothy Freeman. “Mad” has made several trips to Washington, D.C., as a member of the policy committee that helped plan the White House Conference on Aging, May 2-5…. Bob and Ruth Small Harris ’46 find more than enough volunteer work to keep them busy through the quiet winters in their Deer Isle, Maine, home. They left only for visits to a daughter in Raleigh, North Carolina, and a son in Boulder, Colorado…. After thirty-four years with Continental Insurance, Marjorie Harvey Moore retired in 1990. She is a fifty-plus member of the First Methodist Church and the Kappa Delta Psi charitable sorority, in Melrose, Massachusetts. She also attends the First Baptist Church in Nashua, New Hampshire, and is a past-president of the Ocean Park (Maine) Bates Club…. Muriel Henry Tinkham is busy sorting, identifying, and classifying items for the West Springfield (New Hampshire) Historical Society. Her first granddaughter enters college this fall…. Betty Hill Jarvi is on the board of the Visiting Nurse Alliance of Vermont and New Hampshire. She has become mildly involved in collecting and cataloging for the fledgling Plymouth (Vermont) Historical Society, which recently has been revived to remind all that there is a Plymouth beyond Calvin Coolidge. Eldest grandson Timothy graduated from college last May, and daughter Lauren was elected recently to the St. Johnsbury, Vermont, school board…. Phil Isaacson spent two weeks last winter in Mali, West Africa, where he photographed architecture. Then during two weeks in Tuscany he visited friends and took pictures. In November he plans a trip to do more photography in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Burma…. Ervin and Jean Jacobs Perkins have lived in Port Orange, Florida, for seventeen years, but spend their summers in Maine at their cottage on Taylor Pond where they can see a lot of Bates and its activities. Jean still teaches computer Braille at the Blind Library in Daytona Beach, and is on the board of directors….Fred Jones reports from Elephant Butte, New Mexico, that he quit teaching in 1990, and fills his time as a rancher, USBR surveyor, and fleet captain for a sail club, with vacations in such spots as the Pacific Northwest, the Sea of Cortez, and the Gulf Coast…. It was a mini-reunion when Jean Moore Millerand Jean Rosequist Howlett drove to Pennsylvania for a visit with Arlene Crosson Henderson. Jean has also seen ’48-ersJean Holden and Ginny Stoughton…. George and Ruth “Cricket” Olfene Strickholm hike the Long Trail and tend to their six gorgeous Morgans at their Lincoln, Vermont, farm home. Son Norman is mentioned in the winter 1994 Vermont Life article on Lincoln…. Dr. Edward Penn retired from pediatrics practice in 1993. He now finds time for golf, tennis, and biking, and he winters in Scottsdale, Arizona. His family includes his wife, Eleanor, three sons, and four granddaughters…. Jean Rosequist Howlett has had a wonderful time traveling around New York State as a delegate for the Order of the Eastern Star. She also made three trips to Hawaii where daughter Diane is stationed with her Navy husband…. Jane Sedgley McMurray enjoys a “perfect retirement” with no pressures and lots of time for everything…. In New London, New Hampshire, Bob Vernon volunteers at the local hospital, the Council on Aging, and the Audubon Society of New Hampshire. Recently he started taking voice lessons and has been singing with local groups as well as giving an occasional solo.
