The Benjamin Bates Society

The Benjamin Bates Society recognizes the extraordinary philanthropy and personal commitment of Bates donors who have made the College a primary priority, and includes donors with $1 million or more in lifetime gifts to the College.

Membership is the highest distinction conferred upon benefactors of the College and is given in the spirit of Bates’ first benefactor, Benjamin Bates, whose gifts were instrumental in the earliest days of the College.

Inaugurated in 2005, the Benjamin Bates Society reflects the growing numbers of alumni, parents, and friends who are developing meaningful ties with Bates today and stepping forward with increasingly generous gifts to the College. Their support shows a heightened awareness among the Bates community that a Bates education is powerful, transformative, and above all, valuable in today’s complex world.

Collectively, gifts from living and deceased members, representing 42 households, total more than $83 million. Their gifts have been instrumental in helping the College grow and succeed over the years, supporting a range of priorities and financial needs. Approximately 20 households became members during the recent and highly successful Campaign for Bates (2001-2006).
