Tuition Refund Policy

Students who leave Bates during a semester are required to apply in writing and complete a Leave of Absence Form or a Withdrawal Form through the Office of the Dean of Students.  Refunds are issued by the Office of Student Financial Services, upon request, after a leave or withdrawal has been granted.  The first day of the leave or withdrawal is the date indicated by the student on the Leave of Absence or Withdrawal Form.  If no date is indicated, the first day of the leave or withdrawal is defined as the last day the student attended any class.

Some off-campus study programs have an earlier start date than the courses offered on the Bates campus.  When this occurs, the refund schedule begins on the first day of the off-campus study program.

Refund Schedule

If Enrollment Ceases:

Portion of Comprehensive Fee Refunded:

on or before the 1st day of classes            100%
2nd through the 10th calendar day 90%
11th through 20th calendar day 75%
21st through 30th calendar day 50%
31st through 50th calendar day 25%
after 50th day 0%

Refunds of Title IV Federal Financial Aid are made in accordance with federal regulations and might not correspond to the chart above.

Tuition Insurance

Bates offers an optional insurance program which extends the Bates refund policy shown above. This program is known as the Tuition Refund Plan (TRP) and is offered by A.W.G. Dewar, Inc.  The TRP provides policy holders with a 100% refund of the College’s comprehensive fee for withdrawals due to physical illness or accident, and refunds 60% of the comprehensive fee for withdrawals due to psychological reasons.  The TRP premium for the 2009-2010 academic year is $359.  Families who wish to apply for this voluntary program must enroll before September 3, the first day of the Fall Term.  More information about the TRP may be obtained by contacting A.W.G. Dewar directly at (617) 774-1555, or visiting www.collegerefund.com.
