Whiting Teaching Fellowship

The Whiting Teaching Fellowship, funded by the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation, recognizes the importance of ongoing renewal and inspiration for faculty scholarly work that is at the very heart of good teaching. This award for pre-tenure assistant professors whose work is in the humanities underscores the fundamental relationship between excellent teaching and robust scholarship. For the purposes of this award, eligibility is determined by the individual’s area of expertise rather than disciplinary division. For example, a humanist in an Interdisciplinary Program such as Environmental Studies is eligible, as are faculty in History whose scholarly work is situated in the methodologies, theoretical principles and questions of the humanities. The basis of the award is the Fellow’s excellence in teaching while the funding is to be used to support the Fellow’s scholarly endeavors.

The Whiting Fellowship supports full salary and benefits for a half year leave. Preference is given to proposals that link the Whiting Fellowship to a pre-tenure leave so that the Fellow may receive a year’s leave at full salary. Eligibility is after three consecutive years of full-time teaching. Neither the Whiting Fellowship nor a pre-tenure leave may occur during the year the Fellow is reviewed for tenure. The Whiting Fellowship does not change the date of the tenure decision nor does it change the date of eligibility for the first sabbatical which is available in the eighth year of full-time teaching, including the year of the Whiting Fellowship award.

Process and criteria for choosing nominees:

  1. Whiting Teaching Fellowship Selection Committee: This will include the dean of faculty, division chair of Humanities, and two tenured, senior faculty appointed by the Committee of Five from departments/programs with humanities faculty who have no eligible candidates in the year of review.
  2. Timetable: Decisions will be made by October 15.
  3. Candidates: Tenure track, assistant professors whose teaching and scholarly work is in the humanities. For the purpose of this award, eligibility is determined by the individual’s area of expertise rather than disciplinary division. For example, a humanist in an Interdisciplinary Program such as Environmental Studies is eligible, as are faculty in History whose scholarly work is situated in the methodologies, theoretical principles and questions of the humanities. Preference is given to proposals that link a Whiting Fellowship to a scheduled pre-tenure leave.
  4. Process: Candidates who wish to be considered for the Whiting Teaching Fellowship submit 5 packets of the material listed below to the Whiting Teaching Fellowship Committee at the Dean of the Faculty’s Office.
  • An application form.
  • A current curriculum vitae.
  • brief abstract of teaching philosophy.
  • A statement of teaching philosophy and sample syllabi or other course material demonstrating how this philosophy is implemented in your teaching.
  • A title, one paragraph abstract, and a one to two page narrative describing plans for the pre-tenure/Whiting Teaching Fellowship leave.

5. Applicants should also request two letters of recommendation from senior colleagues who know your work as an educator. Letters should be submitted separately by the Senior Colleague to the Dean of the Faculty, 120 Lane Hall.

6. In addition to the above, the quantitative results of course evaluations (made available through the Dean of Faculty’s office) will be considered in the review process.

7. Criteria for selection: Quality of teaching

After the Whiting Teaching Fellowship period, recipients are to submit a report by the end of the fall semester on the scholarly work completed during the award period including reference to how this work will influence future teaching. The Fellow may be asked to present their work to the campus community during the year following the fellowship.
