Late summer also brought Bates alumni together for a special birthday celebration and United Way fundraiser on behalf of Bert Andrews, who, to the deep sadness of his classmates and many Bates friends, lost his three-year battle with cancer just a week later. Cindy Alemian Rice recently sold her gourmet brownie and specialty food business, International Brownies… Anne Allman Van Twisk works on certification as a medical ophthalmology technician and retinal photographer…. Judy Bickford Sassorossi occasionally sees Cheryl and Chris Ham-Ellis, as well as Linda Streeter…. Barb Billinsky Landers and husband have started their own businesses. “So life begins at 50,” she says…. Susie Dombovy Whitelam and husband Keith are heavily involved in athletics. She ran the “Race for Life” 5K three times in support of Bert Andrews‘ cancer fight…. Ann Donaghy is chair of the board of directors for the United Way of Greater Portland…. Paul Erickson lives in Beverly, Mass., and has started a new career and company called Erickson Communications…. Janne Jensen Sahady lives in Newport, R.I., where she recently started a new business named Yoga at Your Place…. Elizabeth Lemerise continues to enjoy teaching child development to undergraduates…. Barb McKusick Liscord earned her master’s in divinity in May 2001 and became the minister of the Unitarian Universalist church in Milford, N.H., in September 2002. Oct. 10 marked the two-year anniversary for Paul Liscord‘s surgery for prostate cancer. He is doing well and continues his construction business…. Norm Olsen and his wife Tasha have moved back from Germany and are living in Portsmouth, N.H…. Carolyn Sauer Hoefer works at a young startup telecom company called Fiberspace in Woodland Hills, Calif. Older son Mark will attend UC-San Diego next year, and younger son Jeff is a sophomore at Malibu High School…. Barb Welch feels turning 50 is just right to reapportion: time, work, material things, energy. She plans to make it a jubilee year!… Joel West at 50 states his “health and family are great.”… Katanya Woods Hamilton called from Wales during the 50th birthday celebration at Tina Psalidas Lamson‘s to say hello to all her Bates friends. She says she would love to see anyone traveling her way.
