Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities

This position requires a very high standard of animal husbandry. Student workers will be responsible for feeding, watering, and taking excellent care of research organisms. Students will also be responsible for sanitation of vivarium spaces and stocking of supplies. This position requires coverage 7-days a week, 365 days a year. Weekend and weekday work available (scheduling is very flexible). There is also work available over academic breaks, when many other students go home.

Qualifications, Requirements, and Responsibilities

Responsibilities


- General husbandry for research organisms housed in colony spaces (feeding/watering, cleaning tanks and cages). - Recording daily information and relaying any pertinent information regarding the health of the research organisms to their supervisor (Vivarium Coordinator) or professor. - Stocking clean supplies such as gloves, paper towels, trash bags, food and bedding in different areas. -Running cleaning equipment (the cage washer and tank washer). - General cleaning of vivarium spaces on a daily or as needed basis.

Requirements


Experience: A science background or previous experience working with animals is preferred. Skills: Vivarium workers are required to have a strong work ethic, good communication skills and attention to detail. They must be able to work independently, must be dependable and honest. Training: All workers will receive training on all tasks they are expected to perform, with frequent check-ins during the training period to ensure all workers are comfortable with the tasks they are asked to perform.

Reporting


Reports to: Workers will report to Jessi Kemp (Vivarium Coordinator). Workers may also need to work with Mark Lessard (Science Resource Technician, who serves as backup to the Vivarium Coordinator). Workers may also work closely or need to report to professors housing the animals when needed.

Working Conditions


Inside, in a climate controlled environment. There are no travel requirements. Workers are required to be able to lift 50 lbs (occasionally).
