CGE: International Circle Orientation Leader (S99740)

Summary

The Center for Global Education seeks enthusiastic student leaders to serve as International Circle Orientation Leaders (ICOLs). ICOLs will guide, support, and mentor new incoming international students as they transition to our campus and community. This is a short-term, high-impact leadership position running from August 21 – August 26, 2026—approximately 6 days and roughly 35-45 hours total.

As an ICOL, you will welcome new international students, facilitate small-group activities, orient them to campus resources, and help manage events including informational sessions and social activities. This role offers valuable experience in cross-cultural communication, event facilitation, and student leadership. You do not need to be an international student to apply, but you must be well familiar with campus resources and the international student experience.

Responsibilities

Program & Student Support:

Welcome and greet new international students upon arrival
Support students with move-in, campus navigation, and administrative processes
Lead social activities and evening events to foster community building
Accompany students on shopping trips, downtown tours, or transportation orientations
Serve as a peer mentor, answering questions about campus life and helping new students navigate their transition

Pre-Orientation & Logistics:

Attend mandatory pre-orientation training sessions
Assist with preparing orientation materials, welcome packets, and event supplies
Plan and prepare group activities and informational presentations
Help coordinate event logistics, including facility setup and cleanup

Administrative & Professional Duties:

Maintain communication with new students through messaging platforms
Provide written feedback and reflection on the orientation experience
Support staff with special projects and tasks as assigned
Model professionalism, confidentiality, and inclusivity at all times.

ICOLs will receive a lump sum stipend of $500 for the full orientation week.

Requirements

Required:

Current Bates student in good academic standing
Fully available for the entire orientation period: August 22 – August 26, 2026, including mandatory pre-orientation training on August 21
Familiarity with campus resources, services, and student life
Superior interpersonal and communication skills
Strong time management and organizational skills
Reliable, mature, detail-oriented, and professional
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Flexible, enthusiastic, and compassionate when working with students who speak English as a second language
Intercultural competence and self-awareness

Preferred:

Prior experience with international student programs or services
Previous participation in an orientation program
Experience studying, working, or living abroad
Proficiency in a language other than English
Experience facilitating group activities
Bates Certified Driver

*Please note: Students serving as AESOP Leaders, Junior Advisors (JAs), Kessler Program Mentors, or in any other capacity during the pre-orientation period are not eligible to apply, due to scheduling conflicts.
