Bates College Athletics is seeking enthusiastic, reliable, and creative students to join the Bates Mascot Team. Team members will play a central role in bringing the Bates Bobcat to life at athletic events, campus programs, and community appearances.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a new and evolving campus tradition. Mascot Team members will help shape the personality, presence, and impact of the Bates Bobcat while representing the College with energy, professionalism, and pride.

Qualifications, Requirements, and Responsibilities

Responsibilities


Mascot Performers (in costume): Perform as the Bates Bobcat at athletic contests and campus events Engage with students, fans, alumni, and community members through non-verbal communication Create an energetic, welcoming, and entertaining presence Collaborate with handlers and staff to ensure safe and effective performances Mascot Handlers / Escorts: Support the mascot during appearances by assisting with crowd interaction and safety Serve as a liaison between the mascot and event staff Help guide movement, timing, and situational awareness Contribute to the overall success of mascot appearances All Team Members: Assist with costume care, maintenance, and general upkeep Help ensure equipment is clean, organized, and performance-ready Contribute ideas for performances, appearances, and engagement opportunities Represent Bates College with professionalism and positive energy Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and strong teamwork

Requirements


Current Bates College student Strong interest in being part of a student-driven campus initiative Energetic, outgoing, and comfortable engaging with others Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team Dependable and responsible For Performers: Comfortable performing in front of crowds Ability to communicate expressively without speaking Willingness to perform in costume (including physical movement and activity) Note: Costume fit and safety considerations will be part of the selection process.

Reporting


Reports to: Assistant Athletics Director for Communications Coordinates/Works Closely with: Athletics Communications staff Athletics Marketing & Promotions Event management and game operations staff Bates Communications & Marketing (as applicable) Campus partners (Admissions, Advancement, Student Life, etc.) for select events

Working Conditions


Working Environment: Mascot Team members perform in a variety of settings, including indoor and outdoor athletic venues, campus events, and occasional community appearances. The environment may include large crowds, loud noise levels, and dynamic event conditions. Most appearances will take place on campus. Limited local travel may be required for community events or off-campus appearances. Physical Requirements: Mascot performers must be able to: Wear a full mascot costume for extended periods of time Perform in varying temperatures and environmental conditions Stand, walk, and move continuously during events Demonstrate physical awareness and coordination while in costume All team members should be able to assist with light lifting and handling of mascot equipment and materials. Mascot Team members are expected to: Develop an understanding of the Bates Bobcat character and its role on campus Follow established performance guidelines and safety protocols Represent Bates College in a positive, professional, and inclusive manner Participate in training sessions and ongoing program development
