ILS: Access Service Specialist (S9839B)

Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities

The Public Services Student Specialist is required to perform many tasks dealing with library patrons and collections. Patrons include Bates College faculty, staff, students, as well as members of the Lewiston/Auburn community. The student will work at one of two Customer Service desks in Ladd Library, either the Circulation Desk or the Audio/Visual Desk.

 

The position requires excellent customer service skills and the ability to perform the following activities with a high level of accuracy:

  • Check-out of materials
  • Handle returned items
  • Shelving library materials
  • Perform inventory of the library’s collections

 

This position requires the student to be reliable and punctual.

Requirements


Student must have completed high school. Library experience is preferred, but not required. This student must have visual acuity sufficient to scan information on books and other materials rapidly and repeatedly for extended periods of time, and to read computer screens for up to several hours a day. He or she must also have the muscular strength adequate to lift heavy books. The books in the stacks are frequently dusty. Sturdy footwear is required.
