Student Support Services

The office of Student Support Services is available to any student who may be struggling to navigate challenges impacting their academic and personal wellbeing while at Bates. We provide support through a variety of means. Additionally, students have access to a wide range of academic support resources, which can be explored in detail here, and/or in partnership with the Director of Student Support Services should you choose to request a meeting.

Student Support Advising

Student Support Advisors provide personal support and supplemental academic advising to a cohort of students. Students are assigned a Student Support Advisor prior to their matriculation and remain with their advisor for the duration of their enrollment at Bates.

For more information, visit the Student Support Advising page.

Bates Care Collaborative

The Bates CARE Collaborative (BCC) is a multidisciplinary team that provides coordinated, proactive, and person-centered support for students, faculty, and staff, who may be in distress and/or exhibiting concerning behaviors. Through evidence-based practices, BCC will identify, assess, intervene, and manage situations that may pose a barrier or threat to the safety and well-being of anyone in the Bates community.

For more information, visit the BCC webpage.

Degree Progress Planning & Leave/Deferral Coordination

Sometimes, there are circumstances that arise that impact a student’s ability to be successful academically. The Office of Student Support Services can provide expert guidance around academic policies and curriculum navigation, and can partner with students and faculty to review student transcripts and determine the best path forward toward completion of a given semester, and eventual graduation.

Options that students may consider in discussion with the Director of Student Support Services include course withdrawals, course deferrals, petitions to the Academic Standing Committee, or medical/personal leaves of absence.

Academic Standing Committee Petitions

The Academic Standing Committee is responsible for evaluating petitions for exceptions to academic standards, policies, and procedures. Additionally, the Committee reviews requests for registration adjustments that are not considered purely administrative in nature. Students who believe their situation may warrant an exemption from an academic policy or requirement may submit a petition to the Committee on Academic Standing.

Petition Form

We encourage students to partner with the Director of Student Support Services as they prepare their petition. For more information on the Academic Standing Committee, and common petitions and considerations, please visit the Academic Standing website.
