Areas of Study
The majors and minors provide concentrated study. A major becomes your area of expertise.
A Bates education is designed to educate students deeply and broadly in the liberal arts and sciences. Majors and minors offer students depth. A major promotes immersion in an academic field of study and requires between 10 and 14 courses. A minor is directed study in a subject area but requires fewer courses.
Some majors and minors focus on specific disciplines; others cross or connect areas of study. Almost all of the 35 majors at Bates culminate in a senior thesis of one or two semesters. The thesis is a highpoint of the senior year and of a Bates education. Not all students choose a minor. Instead they select from dozens of General Education Concentrations which emphasize breadth.
