Forever Garnet—A New Way to Volunteer
Forever Garnet—A New Way to Volunteer
Forever Garnet is a group of dedicated Bates alumni volunteers from the classes of the 1950s through the class of 1970. Many Forever Garnet alumni have been giving time, skills, and resources to Bates for years.
Volunteer service through this new program:
- deepens your connection with the college
- builds relationships with fellow alumni
- strengthens Bates’ long-term sustainability and resources, ensuring the college thrives for generations to come.
Forever Garnet volunteers have opportunities to participate in Bates events, share lifelong learning opportunities that align with Bates’ commitment to the liberal arts, and learn about creative ways to give back to Bates that help ensure the college can continue to provide exceptional education and support to its students.
Thank you for your leadership and dedication to the Bates community!
What does Forever Garnet mean for my ongoing volunteer service?
Forever Garnet volunteers play a vital role in keeping alumni connected and involved with Bates—creating a sense of community among classmates and strengthening their relationship with the college. Responsibilities include:
- Leading by example: Make your Bates Fund gift by December 31.
- Sharing news from campus and speaking with classmates about the importance of giving to Bates now and in the future through estate or planned gifts.
- Attending Forever Garnet Zoom calls to connect with other volunteers.
- Encouraging classmates to participate in virtual or in-person alumni programming.
- Thanking fellow alumni for their engagement and generosity with Bates.
Forever Garnet volunteers contact classmates about remaining connected to Bates and share news from campus. Drawing from the experience of many committed Bates volunteers, the program will help create a strong foundation for Bates’ continued success and growth for years to come.
Forever Garnet is supported through the Bates Office of Gift Planning. Your staff liaison is Susan Dunning, Associate Director of Gift Planning. Please reach out to Susan to learn more.
Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve been a Class Agent and Reunion Volunteer before. What’s going to be different?
Rather than signing the Fall and Spring Bates Fund solicitation letters—which will now be sent directly from Bates—you will have the opportunity to craft a personalized letter to your classmates that highlights the many creative and impactful ways they may choose to support Bates, including through endowment contributions and planned giving opportunities.
Your outreach to classmates will be timed around particular campus or virtual events to encourage attendance rather than being tied to the Bates Fund year.
You will have the opportunity to join together with all volunteers that are a part of Forever Garnet to attend twice-annual volunteer Zoom calls.
You will have the opportunity to collaborate on developing meaningful lifelong learning virtual programs each year.
What’s going to stay the same?
You will still have the opportunity to reach out to classmates about their Bates support, sharing news from campus, and connecting with classmates about the importance of giving to Bates.
You can stay connected with your own class. Bates staff will help you learn how to run your own class-specific Zoom calls and send your own email newsletters. These kinds of gatherings and communications are most meaningful when they come directly from a classmate.
As a Class Agent, I wasn’t talking much about estate gifts. Why now?
We find that after the 55th Reunion, alumni are more interested in planned gifts … For classes in their 50th Reunion and beyond, volunteers can help educate and encourage their classmates to consider making long-term charitable contributions to the college through bequests, trusts, or other planned gifts. Becoming familiar with these creative giving opportunities helps classmates think about their best gifts for Bates, which may include future philanthropic commitments.
