BOC Leadership Meeting Minutes: 1/23/23

  • Update. (Mitchel)
    • Creating a roadmap for February and March. Checking in with all trip leaders. Trying to create a sub-group with head trip leaders to be able to coordinate multiple trips at the same time.

    • Trying to get a lot of photos from trips to promote future trips. Real photos rather than stock photos get more engagement. Meeting with Catie to find a way to get notice of trips that are coming up a lot sooner so it can be easier to post about them.

    • Trying to find ways to work with affinity groups to get out and explore and make it welcoming and genuine.

    • Trying to move all of the logical planning to real action.

    • Making some Nordic skiing trips happen, can be all levels.

    • Winter climbing is not a possibility right now, but leading indoor climbing is being planned (Salt Pump). Also, working to replace the climbing wall- Investor? 
    • Possible reset of the current wall? This could be a possible meeting activity/BOC trip.
      • Has not been reset in about a year. Safety issue. 
    • Women’s climbing Nights? Other groups?

    • Leading the Morse Mountain hike at Popham on January 29th
    • Possibly another trip in February, but nothing is finalized. 
    • Lack of microspikes and snowshoes. 
  • Mt Abram. (Mitchel)
    • $99 carloads count for a 12-person van. 
    • Rentals are ~$25 a person.
      • The BOC could possibly cover this. 
    • It could be on Fridays. 
  • Upcoming Trips. (Mitchel)
    • This weekend there is a Sunday River shuttle on January 28th. 
    • February.
      • Salt Pump is switching to EVO. February 3rd? (Mitchel)
        • Possible seminar on campus. (Liina)
        • Van rental is not open on Sunday, so is it possible to move the day?
      • Mt. Abram, February 3rd. (Nathan) 
      • 4th and 5th, interested in leading a Sugarloaf shuttle? 
      • Winter Carvinal 6th-11th.
        • Puddle Jump.
          • Volunteers? 
        • Snowshoeing to the lean-to and have a campfire/smores February 8th 4:30-9:15.

        • Sledding and hot cocoa Febraury 9th 3:00-5:00 .

  • Regatta. (Mitchel)
    • Create a vessel with a team and compete in a race on the puddle. It was stopped in the past for safety reasons.
    • Life jackets, safe vessel already on the pond, medical staff, team to manage, vessel inspection, pre-register, capped participation. 
    • Possibly too much trash in the puddle?
    • Short-Term, towards the end. It cannot conflict with rafting on May 18th and 19th.

  • Skill Seminars. (Mitchel)
    • Spreadsheet sign-up where people can sign up next to a date on what skill they want to teach. 
    • Google form for members to show what they want to learn/teach. 
    • 5-10 minutes of every meeting are dedicated to this discussion. 
  • Last Meeting?
    • Share the meeting’s agenda ahead of time for leaders to look at/add stuff to. (Mitchel)
    • Switch biweekly normal meetings and activity meetings/skill seminars. (David)
    • Switch up who is running the meetings. (Heidi)
    • Switch up days and times. (Shenny) 
    • Open house/social hour meeting with drinks and snacks. (David)

      • More intermingling opportunities to talk about trips and meet new people.
    • Introductions every meeting?
      • Break out group introductions rather than a full group. (Heidi)
      • If there are a lot of new people or it is the beginning of a semester, there could be a big group introduction. (Shenny)
      • Randomization of break-out groups. (Shenny)
        • Split by categories. (Claire)
    • Ideas.
      • Cross-country skiing. 
      • Ice climbing. 
      • Snacks at meetings. 
      • Sledding after meetings. 
      • Snowshoeing. 
      • Wood carving. 
      • Horseback riding.
        • Partner with the equestrian club. 
      • Whale watching. 
      • Winter surfing. 
      • Casco Bay Island biking. 
      • Canoeing the Androscoggin ~8 miles, 2-5 hours.
        • Could be an overnight.
