Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities

A gamelan scholar will be a student musician with strong aural and rhythmic skills who models rhythmic strength within the Bates Gamelan Ensemble. Prior experience with gamelan is not required, but ensemble experience is a plus. Percussionists are particularly encouraged to apply. As a course auditor or enrolled student, Gamelan scholars will rehearse with the Bates Gamelan weekly on Tuesdays from 4:10-7 with assigned musical parts well-learned. Gamelan scholars must perform with the ensemble in a final concert at the end of the semester. An audition with Professor Gina Fatone is required. Responsibilities


Gamelan scholars will rehearse with the Bates Gamelan weekly on Tuesdays from 4:10-7 with assigned musical parts well-learned. Gamelan scholars must perform with the ensemble in a final concert at the end of the semester. Additional rehearsal hours may be required prior to the final concert.

Requirements


Strong musicianship skills. Ability to work cooperatively within a group and provide gentle assistance to other ensemble members if needed.

Reports to Gina Fatone, Associate Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Department, Director of the Bates Gamelan

Working Conditions


Must be able to sit on the floor while playing instruments.
