A Costume Shop Assistant assists the Costume Director in the finding, organization, creation, cleaning and modification of costumes, accessories and other crafts for productions in both Theater and Dance. The Costume Shop is a busy workshop where you will have a variety of tasks and learning opportunities. The Production Assistant performs a variety of tasks for the Department of Theater & Dance. Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to: building scenic elements and props; using carpentry power tools (drills, saws, fasteners, etc.); painting; hanging / focusing and circuiting lighting fixtures; assisting with tech rehearsals and performances as well as set ups for events in our various spaces.

The Social Media Coordinator must organize and execute outreach via social media applications like Facebook and Twitter that advances the goals of the department to increase the visibility our work in the local community and in raising awareness of the department to prospective students The Social Medial Coordinator will create and post regular, if not daily content for the department’s Facebook page, Twitter account, etc. The student will also coordinate messaging with the Department Chair. The social media coordinator works in a computer based environment and frequently uses the computer and digital photographs.    

The Student Illustrator/Graphic Designer creates posters and other advertising pieces for the Department of Theater and Dance. Student would be responsible for creating art which would be used in all publicity for the Theater and Dance Department. All art would be the property of Bates College.  Will work on departmental computers and may be asked to use their own equipment for production purposes.        

Working closely with Production Assistants, the Student Lead Technician is responsible for building and installing scenery / lighting for performances in the Department of Theater & Dance. The Student Lead Technician leads and oversees projects to completion. This student works in the Schaeffer Theater, Gannett Theater, Black Box, and Scenic Shop.

The House Manager handles various tasks pertaining to the efficiency of theatrical performances and the Theater Department. Specific responsibilities include, but may not be limited to: Run the Box Office Handle large amounts of cash ($100-$2,000) and do proper accounting Ticket organization and distribution Poster distribution on and off campus Finding, training, and supervision of Student Ushers Must attend every performance (if there are two workers, they can rotate, but there must always be at least one HM at every show) Crowd control and audience relations Coordination of start of show and intermission with TD and SM Must be prepared to handle emergency audience evacuation (fire, weather, bomb threat, etc.), drunk and disorderly conduct (removal of individual and contact security), enforce…

This is a production-specific position (vs. an ongoing weekly schedule), and it is imperative that this student be able to commit to the full schedule of technical rehearsals and performances for the production in question. This commitment is likely to add up to more than 20 hours a week during a very limited period of time.
