Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities

The Community Outreach Coordinator (COC) is responsible for leading and facilitating community outreach with the goal of furthering the work of equity and inclusion within The Bates Student and with the campus community more broadly, as well as cultivating a supportive and inclusive work environment for all staff members and staff writers.

This role was created with the specific goal to cultivate and strengthen relationships with affinity groups, including but not limited to Bates Black Student Union (BSU), Caribbean Student Associations (CSA), International Club, Latinos Unidos, and Asian-American Students in Action Association (AASIA).

Qualifications, Requirements, and Responsibilities

Responsibilities


Primary Responsibilities: Facilitate and attend bi-monthly meetings with our Equity & Inclusion Committee, develop a guiding mission statement, and plan racial justice training for both current and future staff members. Coordinate and help lead bi-annual staff-wide Social & Racial Justice Training, including identifying a facilitator. Collaborate with the Office of Intercultural Education (OIE), the Equity, Inclusion, and Anti-racism Student Advisory Committee 2020-2021, and the Office of Campus Life, student affinity groups, and other campus organizations/offices to further the work of equity and inclusion within The Bates Student. Cultivate and strengthen relationships with campus affinity groups and underrepresented groups to make sure all voices can be heard and can access The Bates Student as a platform. Identify community needs and events happening on campus and in Lewiston-Auburn and communicate these event details to Managing Editors to diversify content in a manner that is respectful and beneficial to affinity groups. Secondary Responsibilities: Host 2-3 panels, workshops, or other educational events related to equity and inclusion within the field of journalism. Help to educate staff on the AP style guide about the use of Black vs. black, BIPOC as opposed to people of color, Indigenous or indigenous, etc. Assist with training and hiring new staff members to attract and retain diverse and qualified candidates.

Requirements


Desired Skills: Genuine commitment to equity and inclusion. You are passionate about building an inclusive and equitable community with students from diverse backgrounds, political beliefs, and racial, ethnic and gender identities. Experience leading a team in difficult conversations toward short-term and longer-term goals. Participation in seminars about diversity in the workplace is a plus
