“What is a Diva? Pauline Viardot and the Nineteenth-Century Stage”

Throughout the nineteenth century, operatic divas were expected to do far more than sing. In addition to learning new roles within weeks, these singers also had to choose their own costumes, write their own cadenzas, and occasionally help the composer tweak his musical lines. This talk looks at this phenomenon through the lens of one of the nineteenth century’s most remarkable divas, Pauline Viardot.
