BOC Meeting Minutes: October 13, 2022

  • Welcome, grounding in exercise (Pia)
    • Introduction of everyone at the meeting, and breakdown of the content of the meeting. 
  • Ronan- Voting
    • Ronan discusses voting and activism in the upcoming midterm election. The voting registration deadline on campus is October 17, 2022, but you can drop off registration cards at city hall in downtown Lewiston. 
    • Ronan discusses the potential efforts of individuals to stop college students from voting, all of these efforts are rooted in falsified information and it is important to look past these and vote. 
    • Ronan discusses the opportunity to receive help from Bates in voting in your home state, and gives out information regarding voting registration. 
    • Discussion of environmental political issues individuals are passionate about on the BOC. Ronan is sharing these issues with jvendil@bates.edu
      • Preserving our environment and paying respect to indigenous peoples.
      • Power grids and corridors in regards to public vs. private utilities.
  • Announcements- Centennial this weekend
    • Centennial plus two is this coming weekend, which is the various events with the BOC alumni. Discussion of details and transportation for those who signed up. 
  • New leadership team Intros 
    • Introduction of the new leadership team. 
      • Claire Barlass, head trip leader: backcountry trips
      • Tommo White, head trip leader: water sports- expanding the surfing program.
      • David Nimura, head trip leader: front country trips.
      • Liina Koch, head trip leader: rock climbing. 
      • Pia Schultz, outdoor programs manager: organizes events and programs for the BOC. 
      • Allie Reardon, treasurer and historian: organizes expenses and balances budget.
      • Mya Laliberte, secretary: takes minutes during meetings, assists in communications, oversees elections
      • Shenny Waugh, social media and marketing: managing social media projects for the BOC.
      • Heidi Nydam, community liaison: overseeing community engagement in Lewiston and Maine.
      • Nathan Huynh, Equity & Inclusion: ensure the continued improvement of the accessibility & inclusion of the outing club to all Bates students.
  • Trip calendar/trip proposals
    • Trips recommended. 
      • Salt pump: biweekly Fridays. 
      • Surf trips: Sundays.
      • Trips to Sugarloaf, Sunday River, Black Mountain of Maine: weekends.
      • Morning paddle/Sunrise paddle: early mornings Thursday/Friday.
      • Climbing outside (Rumney/Acadia): weekend.
      • Shorter hiking trips (Tumbledown/Bradbury): weekends.
      • Skill seminars: weekdays. 
      • Camp fire at the BOC cabin: October, 27th.
      • Trail Maintenance on the AT in Rangeley. 
      • Mountain biking trips (the BOC is working on adding them to the E-Room).
      • Mycology walk
    • Pia talked about increasing the BOC presence on campus and how we could collaborate with other clubs through trips and seminars.
      • Cycling club.
      • Run club.
      • Geology club.
      • Astronomy club.
      • Asian Student Association.
  • Trip Leader training
    • Criteria to be a trip leader for the BOC. 
      • AESOP Leader Certification and Wilderness First Aid Training.
      • Two 5 hour days in the classroom, weekend leadership training, and Wilderness First Aid Training. 
        • This would typically take 3 weekends.
    • Would BOC members like to see more meetings?
      • Weekly.
      • Biweekly.
      • More “get to know each other” events. 
      • Possibly having BOC meetings at The Ronj.
      • Possibly moving meeting times on Wednesday, as many clubs at Bates meet on Wednesday nights. 
  • Matt Baker-White- Wild Rockies Field Institute
    • Matt was part of the class of 2013 and was the BOC president. He works in outdoor education, and is part of the Wild Rockies Field Institute. You can participate and receive transfer credit from the University of Montana and bring it back to the Bates Registrar. This credit can be in studies of restoration ecology, glaciers, backcountry, frontcountry, Yellowstone, cycling courses, climate change and energy, art and climate change in New Mexico, etc. This program also works with local and indigenous communities in the West. This program could act as a study abroad program, Summer program, or as a short-term experience.
