BOC Meeting Minutes: 1/17/24

  • Introductions (Shenny & Owen)
  • Winter Carnival (Shenny)
    • February 5-10th.
      • Mon– Boxsledding.
      • Tues– Campstove iron chef.
      • Wed– Collaboration w/ Club Nordic (relay for all levels).
      • Thurs– Community event. 
      • Fri– Torch runs from the statehouse to the puddle → Puddle Jump 
    • WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR THE PUDDLE JUMP!!! (Owen)
      • A Google Form will be sent out to sign up. 
    • Community event. (Lili)
      • We are using the Halloween trick-or-treating event as inspiration. This will be on Alumni, doing Winter activities, and inviting people from the community. 
  • Upcoming Trips (Shenny)
    • More Winter-focused trips– reach out to Adam (Winter Sports Head Trip Leader) if you are a trip leader interested in leading a trip. (aoppenheimer@bates.edu)
    • Ideas from trip leaders.
      • Claire– Intro nordic trips. 
      • Ethan– Intro to the backcountry. 
      • David– Trip to view the eclipse this Spring. 
    • General Ideas.
      • Snowshoeing, sledding, rock climbing, shuttles to ski areas, hockey on the puddle, curling, building an igloo then sleeping in it, intro to ice fishing. 
    • Planned Trips.
      • Mon-Wed February Break– Nordic hut trip through Flagstaff Lake (for all levels).
      • Mountain Film Festival – February 15, 2024.
      • Trip leader training this Spring if anyone is interested in leading trips next year. 
  • ETL tests (Ethan)
    • For higher education, there are new guidelines for trip leaders from the State of Maine. There is a special committee working with Bates, and if you are a trip leader now you need to take the ETL test to receive a permit (valid for 5 years). This is new and works in tandem with the Bates trip leader curriculum. 
    • Do you need to pay for the exam? (Lili)
      • No, it is all covered. (Ethan)
    • Dates of the exam planned.
      • January 23– 6-7:30
      • February 2– 1-2:30
