A New Menu Structure & Search Refinement

The WebTeam has been working on updating the navigation menu structure for the Bates site. The new menu structure is based on analytics, feedback, conversations, industry best practices and departmental directives. We have prepared the video above that illustrates the upcoming changes. We plan to update the site at the beginning of next week.

Some Background Info

The new navigation menu is called an UberMenu (or mega menu). The UberMenu allows a visitor to more quickly navigate between sites and content; many of the links that were once two, three or four clicks away will now be one click away! Also, the second change you’ll notice is to the Search box. The new Search box’s larger size and high contrast styling make it more familiar and user friendly. The Footer has been updated and cleaned up. For those changes, we used the same analytics, feedback and click/heat-map data mentioned above.

Finally, we have included Alumni as a top-level navigational item, as this major audience for Bates.edu comes to the site for information, news and to support the college with online giving. It’s exciting to be able to make these informed, analytic-based changes to better serve our constituents.
