Calvin Mako, Visiting Professor in Geology, presented at the national meeting of the Geological Society of America

Calvin traveled to Phoenix, Arizona for the annual Geological Society of America meeting in September, where he chaired a session on linking geochronology to high temperature deformation and presented research on monazite dates from Scotland.  Monazite can provide detailed geochronology information on the timing and conditions of metamorphism.  In this case, the laser ablation ICP-MS dating of monazite from samples taken from the Sgurr Beag nappe revealed two phases of fluid mediated monazite alteration, each related to different temperatures of metamorphism.
