Parent Email Updates

To help you support your student and to provide you with ways to connect to the larger Bates community, the Parent Team sends out periodic email updates to those families for whom we have active email addresses. Our updates are meant to supplement official college information, so please keep directing your student to their Bates email account and continue to watch the Fall 2020 website.

Our more recent update emails will have the most reliable information to support you and your student. Please note that links and information from earlier updates may have changed or moved as the college’s plans have continued to evolve.

If you do not receive these email updates and wish to do so, please first check your spam folder and then reach out to records@bates.edu to make sure the college has your correct contact information.

August 7 — Latest fall updates, plus next Q&A on Aug. 17

Hello, Bates Families –

We share several important updates with you today:

A reminder that if your student wishes to change from on-campus to remote study, please have them contact Faith Hauger, studentaffairs@bates.edu, by the end of the day on Friday, August 7, or as soon as possible.

There is a lot to navigate this year, and we appreciate all you are doing to support your students.

Best regards,
The Bates Parent Team

August 3 — Forum Recording and Drop-off Information

Hello, Bates Families –

A recording of today’s parent forum is now available. Please contact us at parents@bates.edu for the link and password.

Your students received information this morning (Aug. 3) in their Bates email about pre-arrival and drop-off procedures. We urge you to read this update closely to support your student’s safe arrival on campus.

If any of these plans make you or your student uncertain or concerned about returning to campus in the fall, your student should elect to remain home and do remote learning, which will allow them to continue to make academic progress. Please have your student notify Faith Hauger, studentaffairs@bates.edu, by Friday, Aug. 7, if they wish to change from on-campus to remote learning for the fall semester.

Students were directed to complete their public health agreements via Garnet Gateway by Friday, July 31. Please be aware that the Housing team sent a reminder today (Aug. 3) to students who did not meet this deadline and informed students that if they do not complete this step by noon Eastern on Wednesday, August 5, they will be removed from their housing assignment and moved to remote study.

We remind you that the Fall 2020 site, related links, and FAQ are updated regularly. We have also updated the resources available through the Parent site and created an archive of parent email updates.

Best regards,
The Bates Parent Team

July 24 — Fall Update and Upcoming Aug. 3 Q&A

Hello, Bates Families –

This week, students received multiple email updates regarding plans for fall. The links below provide detail on many key planning elements:

  • Incoming students received their housing assignment and move-in date on Wednesday; returning students received information on Thursday about how to use Garnet Gateway to select their preferred move-in date/time. There is an updated FAQ on housing and Res Life (for all students) and on summer placement for fall housing (for returning students who await housing assignments).
  • Schedule of Courses and Teaching Modes – Earlier today, the Schedule of Courses was posted showing all courses for the fall semester with their instructor-designated teaching modes.
  • Class Schedules – Sophomores, juniors, and seniors (returning students) received an email from Mary Meserve, Registrar, providing this information now that courses have been shifted to the 2+2 model. First-year students received their First-Year Seminar assignments on Wednesday and will register for their additional three fall courses next week.
  • There is a new FAQ explaining the college’s COVID-19 testing. Bates tests will be processed by the Broad Institute.
  • The Student Public Health Agreement and Other Documents can be completed by your student through Garnet Gateway.
  • If your student’s plans for the fall have changed since they completed the Fall Attendance Questionnaire, please have them contact Faith Hauger in Student Affairs at fhauger@bates.edu.
  • Please remind your student to check their Bates email address about the upcoming July 30 Q&A session for incoming and returning students.

We know this is a significant amount of information and that, even after reading the updates, families are likely to have questions about logistics for fall. We will host a parent Q&A on Monday, August 3 at noon Eastern.

Please visit our website for a list of panelists and a submission form for questions. As with past events, we will record this panel and share a link as soon as the recording is posted.

To attend the forum on August 3 at noon Eastern, please contact the Parent Team at parents@bates.edu.

We thank you for your patience and partnership as plans have evolved. Keep your students watching their Bates emails!

Best regards,
The Bates Parent Team

July 20 — Further Information for Fall

Hello, Bates Families –

We write to share that your students received an update yesterday at their Bates email address letting them know that they will receive information on a number of significant topics this week:

– Move-in Date/Phased Return to Campus
– Course Enrollments and Teaching Modes
– COVID-19 Testing
– Student Public Health Agreement and Other Contracts

Many thanks for your patience as the college has sorted through an extraordinary number of details and intersecting issues, such as the relationship between your student’s move-in date and the college’s COVID-19 testing capacity.

The Bates website will be updated with the release of new information. Our team will also be back in touch with you directly with a round-up of helpful links for families.

Please encourage your student to keep watching their Bates email, as this will be a busy week for information.

Best regards,
The Bates Parent Team

July 14 — Incoming Parent Update (Class of 2024)

Dear Class of 2024 Families,

We’ve learned there is a glitch with the recording of the incoming parent Q&A held last Thursday, July 9. Please email us at parents@bates.edu to receive a new link and password to view the recording.

Here are some other updates and resources:

  • Please remind your student that an “Ask Me Anything” about First Year Seminar (FYS) will be held today, July 14, at 5:00 pm EDT. Professors will discuss FYS, registration for which is open through this Friday, July 17. All students received the event link in their Bates email and will receive the recording link after the event.
  • Our colleagues in the Office of Residence Life have put together a helpful FAQ. Now that students have submitted their July 9 Fall Attendance Questionnaire, planning about the phased move-in can proceed quickly, so please have students keep an eye on their Bates email.
  • We know our international students face an additional layer of challenges. Please refer to the FAQ prepared in response to the July 6 ICE directives, reach out to the staff listed with questions about your particular situation, and watch for Zoom sessions for international students and families hosted by the Center for Global Education.
  • For our student-athletes, we know there are many questions about the fall season. Please keep an eye on regularly updated FAQ for Athletics.

Lastly, while an in-person Back to Bates is not possible this year, please look forward to a virtual experience and to the schedule of Summer Welcome Events just for new parents.

We are glad you are part of the Bobcat family!

Best regards,
The Bates Parent Team

May 29 — Update for Families of Returning Students

Dear Bates Families,

Greetings from Maine! You are an important part of the Bates community, and as we move into summer, we hope you will stay connected with Bates.

Please explore these Bates resources:

  • Our colleagues in Purposeful Work are ready to help your student have a purposeful summer, even in the time of Covid-19.
  • Is your student missing Commons? Try serving up a taste of Bates, thanks to these cooking videos from the talented folks at Bates Dining.
  • Join us for the livestream of this year’s virtual Commencement celebration this Sunday, May 31 at noon Eastern. Encourage your student to submit a message of congratulations for friends in the Class of 2020 – or share well-wishes of your own!
  • Has your student checked out the B-Well class calendar? There are several options such as boot camps, yoga, and stretching, and no advance sign up is required. Participants’ screens are muted upon entry, and they can choose whether to have their video on or off (most people choose off).

We wish you a healthy summer, wherever you might be.

Best wishes,

Emily Bray Levine
Director of Parent Giving and Engagement
