Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities

The Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area (BMMCA) Steward and Education Assistant will support BMMCA management by working with the Director and lead steward, maintaining visitor records, monitoring usage, and assisting with social media. This staff member may engage the general public through educational activities, materials and outreach.

Responsibilities


The BMMCA Steward and Education Assistant tasks include greeting and informing visitors of BMMCA, maintaining visitor records, monitoring the entrance and parking lot, walking the trail and beach, checking for damage or rule violations, and communicating with the BMMCA Director. This staff member may also 1) engage with the local community to convey findings and provide educational opportunities for visiting school groups; 2) develop place-based educational materials related to sea level rise, tides and climate resiliency; 3) support BMMCA social media presence; 4) record beach profiles at a number of area beaches; 5) conduct intertidal surveys at several area rocky shoreline sites; and 6) analyze, document and archive data. Other duties may include updating BMMCA educational materials and website language, creating a digital record of the visitor logs, supporting management activities within the Conservation Area, etc. The work schedule may include weekends and holidays, and must coordinate with work hours of the other stewards.

Requirements


Required: HS diploma; experience with public relations; ability to relate to the public diplomatically and effectively, with firmness when necessary. Ability to be flexible and adjust to a changing schedule depending on weather, tides, etc. Ability to effectively manage multiple projects at one time. Willing to work weekends and holidays. Desired: Experience with place-based education and/or environmental education, science communication and outreach to varying audiences, fieldwork, data collection, entry and management, and social media.

Reporting


REPORTS TO: Rebecca Clark Uchenna, Director and Robert Long, Lead Steward COORDINATES/WORKS CLOSELY WITH: Rebecca Clark Uchenna, Robert Long, Bev Johnson, Morse Mountain residents (including St. John family members), staff from The Nature Conservancy, Maine Audubon, and the general public.

Working Conditions


The Steward must have a reliable vehicle and valid drivers license in order to travel to BMMCA, located in Phippsburg, ME. The Steward will be working mostly in an outdoor setting in varying weather conditions. Walking/hiking will be required. Optional summer housing at Shortridge Coastal Center may be provided, a short 3-minute drive to/from BMMCA.
