Bates Curates

Join the Bates College Museum of Art for a unique opportunity to shape the future of our permanent collection! In this special interactive event, we invite members of the Bates community to help determine our next major acquisition.

Museum staff have identified three compelling works by acclaimed photographer Shelburne Thurber, known for her evocative explorations of interior spaces. In this session, Assistant Curator Samantha Sigmon will provide historical context, aesthetic analysis, and personal insight into how each piece would complement the existing holdings. Afterwards, attendees will be invited to vote on which artwork they would like to see purchased for our permanent collection. This is a rare chance to go behind the scenes of the curatorial process and leave a lasting mark on the museum’s legacy. Come cast your vote and help us choose the newest addition to the Museum of Art’s permanent collection!

Organized in conjunction with the exhibition Shelburne Thurber: Full Circle, on view through March 21, the event and acquisition process are made possible by the Barbara Morris Goodbody Collection Endowment Fund.
