Claire Seidl (American b. 1952)

Seidl is an abstract painter and photographer who received her BFA from the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University and an MFA in painting from Hunter College, City University in New York, where she later taught. She describes her work as drawing “the viewer into my world, encouraging contemplation and challenging our perception of the often thin line between reality and abstracted memory.”

Photographed at night, Porch Dinner captures Seidl’s family dinner with a long exposure so each member looks like an apparition. Seidl alludes to the presence of people in their absence, creating contemplative images that are difficult to fully resolve and always dynamic and evolving. Seidl has had 40 solo shows and participated in over 100 group exhibitions, many in colleges and universities in the Eastern US.
