Max Klinger, was widely regarded as a central artistic figure in the turn of the century, for his synthesis of symbolism, romanticism and the sublime.  His imagery directly influenced the surrealists, and recently his work has been considered modern.  The Intermezzi series evokes this synthesis, as well as an assemblage of themes and subjects, across all twelve masterful etchings and aquatints.
