Understanding Migration to Maine

In collaboration with teachers at Lewiston High school, this curriculum unit was created to address recent migration to Maine, a topic that is not normally included in curriculum but has become increasingly relevant as the refugee population in Lewiston has increased over the last two decades. The five week unit covers topics including: recent migration to Maine, life in Dadaab refugee camp, drivers of migration, and migration law. This unit was taught to 9th grade World History students of varying academic levels and was differentiated to meet their needs and strengths. Lessons were created with both an option for in-person and remote learning to accommodate the teachers’ needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
