This is not an hourly position. It is a fellowship that comes with a stipend. Utilize Adobe InDesign to help create monthly, 10-page print publications. Dedicate one night every two weeks to collaborative newsroom editing. Take creative initiative to improve reachability, presence, and interactivity across campus, including amongst alumni, staff, and faculty. Collaborate with photographers to uphold the quality of images for print. Collaborate with the managing editor team to design and publish special editions of the paper including, but not limited to, an orientation issue, Sex Week edition, and Spudent. The Assistant Digital Editor assists in the upkeep and maintenance of the website, newsletter, and social media accounts. They work alongside the Digital Editor to assist with all digital projects. They are also responsible for helping to upload content every publishing week, which includes creating new posts and pages on WordPress, copy and pasting headlines, articles and captions from Word documents and InDesign files, as well as uploading and formatting photos in each article.

The Community Outreach Coordinator (COC) is responsible for leading and facilitating community outreach with the goal of furthering the work of equity and inclusion within The Bates Student and with the campus community more broadly, as well as cultivating a supportive and inclusive work environment for all staff members and staff writers.   The role of the Editor-in-Chief entails supervising Section Editors and ascertaining that each section meets the quota of articles needed for publishing. This individual must have a finger on the pulse of the campus and community and connect Section Editors with Community leaders as well as students, staff, and faculty on campus. The Editor-in-Chief is required to write at least one article per issue, however the number can increase if needed. This position also consults with Layout each week and gives the final read through before sending the publication to print. 

This person must be in touch with all the events, discussions, and changes happening on campus and in the community. They will also have to be comfortable creating topics for other Assistant Editors and staff writers, and they will oversee and edit all articles for their section. In this position, there is the flexibility to work on both short and long term articles. Must write at least 1 article per issue.

A webmaster position for the Student entails upkeeping the Bates Student WordPress website. This position includes designing web and page layouts, fixing bugs and glitches, basic website maintenance, and creating new website features. 2-3 hrs/week

  Business Managers assist the Editor-in-Chief with keeping within the budget each issue. Business Managers are also responsible for outreach to local businesses/organizations looking to purchase advertising space in the newspaper as well as reaching out to alumni and parents who wish to subscribe to The Student. 

  This individual is responsible for coming up with article ideas for Section Editors, assisting the Editor-in-Chief, and working on social media outreach for enlisting writers and increasing Student readers. This person is required to write at least one article per issue, and may also keep the website up to date with more time-sensitive content of campus and community news. 

  Layout Designers play a crucial role in the newspaper team by piecing together articles and photographs in a professional, legible format. A typical publishing week for Layout includes first creating a rough draft layout of each section for Managing and Assistant Editors to look over before piecing all sections together into a PDF and sending to the Sun Journal for printing. 6 hrs/week.

This person is expected to pick up newspapers from Post & Print on Wednesdays and distribute them to various newspaper boxes around campus in a timely manner.
