The assistant dean oversees student development programs, including research grants, fellowships, and C3 undergraduate fellowships. She serves as the point person for department and program reviews; international faculty and international guest scholars; the Language Assistant Program; the STEM Scholars Program; and Commencement. She coordinates the Mount David Summit and edits the College Catalog and Faculty Handbook.

Q&A: Senior speaker Sebenele Lukhele embraces Bates’ prom…

Sebenele Lukhele ’26 of Manzini, Eswatini, will deliver the Senior Address at the 160th Commencement on Sunday, May 31.

For four weeks during this year’s Short Term, 31 Bates students — biology, economics, and philosophy majors alike — caught a glimpse of careers in business while taking the Tuck Business Essentials course, offered for the first time this year in collaboration with Dartmouth’s Amos Tuck School of Business Administration.

Whatever their prior knowledge of business, the students showed up with critical thinking skills and eagerness to learn in-hand — hallmarks of a Bates education — says Peter Friedman ’92, who earned an MBA from Tuck in 2003 and served as practitioner-in-residence for Tuck Business Essentials.

“Students were very engaged and interested in the topic, which was great,” Friedman says. “They were strong and very capable.”
