Tap out a note to magazine@bates.edu!Nancy Carlisle, curator of collections for the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, organized the SPNEA’s Cherished Possessions: A New England Legacy. The exhibit features nearly 200 fine and decorative arts objects selected based on their ability to tell a story about New England and the nation, from the 1600s to mid-1900s. To celebrate the national traveling exhibition, SPNEA partnered with Boston’s Old South Meeting House to present an illustrated lecture series on the exhibition. On Nov. 6, Nancy discussed how the exhibit objects reflect the larger historical themes of revolution, immigration, industrialization, and reform. For example, what can a teapot belonging to Boston Massacre martyr Crispus Attucks, or pottery vases made by immigrant women in Boston’s North End, tell about the long, storied history of New England?
