Dendrology class develops campus tree website

Students in BIES 271 (Dendrology) worked with Biology Prof. Brett Huggett to inventory and bar code tag all the trees on the main quad of the Bates campus during the fall term course. For each species, the students created an information record and compiled them into a new interactive, database of campus trees called Bates Canopy. Using a mobile device with a bar code app, campus community members and visitors can directly access the website to learn more about each species. In addition, an interactive map on the website allows users to select a tree by its location on the campus to access its identification and database record. For now, only the trees on the main quad have been mapped, but Prof. Huggett plans to eventually include all campus trees in the Bates Canopy database.
