Bates College was founded by Oren Cheney, a Freewill Baptist and ardent abolitionist. The college was initially financed by Benjamin Bates, an industrialist who derived his wealth from local textile mills weaving slave-grown cotton. How should we in the present understand and acknowledge this foundational paradox?
