At the funeral for Howard Baker in February, his granddaughter Kate, who is the daughter of David ’70 and Pamela Decker Baker ’69, read a poem, an excerpt of which follows:

Grandpa.
Protector. Provider.
a safe haven in
a wild nor-easter.
big strong arms.
navigating a WW 2 fighter.
Logical. Rational.
loved by many
and loved many.
Family, close-knit.
Stubborn, proud.
Laughs loud.
voice booming across
dining room table.
caring. Supporter.
Bates class ring
gold and shiny
faded and familiar.

Cammie Glazier Burnight is still looking for Bates alums at her retirement community in a beautiful wooded area of Washington, D.C. The Foreign Service people, academics, writers, and teachers who are her neighbors try hard to fill the void. She likes the easy commute into downtown to take advantage of the cultural offerings.
