Hello Class of 2027!

We hope that you are having a great summer and that you are starting to get excited about coming to campus in late August! This email reviews how you access your Summer Resources page, which is hosted on the Bates course management website known as Lyceum and which opens today!!

Summer Resources for the Class of 2027 on Lyceum

The “Summer Resources and Orientation Class of 2027” that will help you prepare for the Fall 2023 semester. We will release more resources in July and a few more in August. You must review these resources in their entirety as they are part of your First-Year Experience Program.

The key dates when more information will appear are:

  • June 29 (Today) — Welcome to Bates and the Values of the First-Year Experience
  • On or near July 10 — Academic Planning and Course Registration
  • On or near August 9 — Bates History and Commitment to Equity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism
  • On or near August 16 — Community Expectations, Resources, and Supports
  • On or near August 23 — Last Minute Information Before Arrival

“Summer Resources and Orientation Class of 2027” is stocked with videos and other resources to help you learn more about Bates, the many facets of the First-Year Experience (FYE) Program, and the registration process for Fall 2023 courses (course registration and academic exploration information will be accessible on or near July 10).

Accessing Lyceum

To access Lyceum simply go to the Quad at https://quad.bates.edu/ and click on the bar labeled “Lyceum.”

Once at the Lyceum landing page, enter your username and password. Your username is NOT your 9-digit User ID that you use to access the Garnet Gateway. It is usually some combination of your first initial and last name; it is the same combination of first initial and last name that precedes @bates.edu in your Bates email address.

Once you’ve entered Lyceum, you will see a box labeled “First-Year Summer Resources and Orientation Class of 2027.” Click on it. This will bring you to a letter from us. After reading the letter, simply scroll down and you will see a tile labeled “Welcome to the Bates Community.” Once you click on this tile, a set of resources including short videos featuring Bates faculty, staff, and students will open. Please review these resources and watch these videos in the next few days.

The Next Tile of Summer Resources & Orientation Opens On or Near July 10, 2023

As summer continues, more tiles will appear on this Lyceum page, and we will notify you by email when they do. Importantly, on or near July 10, a tile called “Exploring Liberal Arts and Academic Opportunities” will open. It will contain information about how to register for your required First-Year Seminar (FYS) and your 3 other classes that will make up your Fall 2023 schedule. So, be sure to check your email on or near July 10 to access this important information.

There will also be a web forum via Zoom so that you can ask questions about Fall course registration. This session will be from 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm EDT on Tuesday, July 18, 2023. It will include a panel of faculty from across the social sciences, humanities, languages, arts, interdisciplinary studies, and sciences. It will cover information about placement tests, credits, general education requirements, the engineering 3-2 program, pre-health professional requirements, and more. It will be recorded so everyone can view it even if you cannot attend in real time (although we do encourage logging on if you can). We will provide you with the zoom link and more details on or near July 10.

We look forward to working with you throughout the summer!

Steve Engel, Professor of Politics and Associate Dean of the Faculty
