Orientation Week Leaders

Student Staff 2024

OWLs are students who are dedicated to making the First-Year Orientation Week warm, welcoming, and fun! With support from the Office of Campus Life, we are dedicated to providing an informative environment, fostering social connection, and supporting the physical and emotional well-being of new students on campus.

Our team hosts a wide array of events to engage first-year students and help them get acquainted with campus. We also organize several experiences to give students a little taste of what the local Lewiston/Auburn community has in store for them!

OWLs are passionate about our school and are committed to helping each incoming student find confidence and excitement in their new Maine home.

We can’t wait to meet you! If you have any questions, feel free to email us at fye@bates.edu! We’d be more than happy to help!

Meet the Team:

Emma Gay ’25 – Student Director

Hometown: Herndon, VA

Hi, y’all! My name is Emma (she/her) and I am a double major in Anthropology and Classical and Medieval Studies. On campus, I work in Admissions as a tour guide, student coordinator, and senior fellow. I am also President/Captain of the Club Ski Team, a flutist in the orchestra, and First-Year Experience Coordinator for Campus Activities and Traditions (CAT) – so you’ll probably see me running around campus. I also love hammocking out on the quad and exploring Maine! I’m so excited to meet y’all :))

Elena Valle ’25 – Assistant Student Director

Hometown: Damascus, MD

Hi guys! My name is Elena and this fall I will be a senior! I am a Psychology major with a Music and Culture GEC. When I’m not studying, I love going on trips with the Bates Outing Club, hanging out with friends, grabbing Forage, and listening to music. I also work in the Olin Arts Center so you might see me working concerts! I’m so excited to meet you all and be part of your orientation experience! See you soon :)

Kate Schulze ’26 – Assistant Student Director

Hometown: Hudson, OH

Hi everyone!!! My name is Kate Schulze, and I am a Chinese and Math double major, with a DCS concentration. I had a great time being an Orientation Week Leader last year and cannot wait to return to the team as your Assistant Director! Outside of class, I enjoy exploring Maine with friends, day trips to the coast, working for student government, and staying active at Bates’ gym. You can often find me sipping coffee at Le Ronj, even if I have already had Dunkin that same morning! I cannot wait to meet the class of 2028!
