World Language Scholarships

The Center for Global Education assists Bates students with applying for national fellowships and scholarships through recruitment and advising. We are available to assist students throughout these processes in whatever way they may need. There are two world language scholarships, as described below, that staff regularly assist students with. Both scholarships are highly competitive.

Critical Language Scholarship

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an immersive summer opportunity for American college and university students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world. Students must be a US-citizen or national to be eligible for this program.
Languages offered: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, & Urdu. Please review the CLS website for more information.

Boren Scholarships

The Boren Awards comprise of a scholarship and fellowship. The scholarship is for undergraduate students and is a competitive process for funding to study a critical world language. A list of languages available are on their website. These awards are meant to provide funding for study abroad programs focused on intensive language learning with a focus on critical languages. Consultation with CGE staff will be necessary to align the scholarship requirements with Bates approved programs for off-campus study. These awards are available to US citizens or nationals.
