3D Printing

The Imaging Center currently has two 3D printers (FDM) available to the Bates Community. The Dimension SST 1200es is used exclusively for academic projects, and is located in the Imaging Lab. Contact Kai Evenson if you would like to learn more about this printer.

Our newest printer, the Lulzbot Taz 6, is located in the Gallery, and is available to members of the Bates College community for both academic and personal projects.

This printer prints with nontoxic PLA filament, and provides a 11 in x 11 in x 10 in (L x W x H) print area, with individual layer thicknesses ranging from 0.05mm to 0.5mm.

Lulzbot Taz 6 Usage Guidelines

Members of the Bates Community are welcome to request one personal print free of charge. To make a request, email Kai Evenson and include the file you would like to print (in .stl or .obj format), and the desired color.

For additional prints, users must attend a training session, covering basic operation of the Taz 6 and the printing software (Cura).

The form for training requests can be found here: https://goo.gl/forms/GvpRROqTyRq3G2vh1

3DHubs.com also has a nice guide for designing parts for FDM printing available online.

After completing a training session, users will be able to operate the Taz 6 and schedule additional prints. These will be scheduled on a first-come-first-served basis, with priority given to academic projects, and with the understanding that, in most cases, individual users will be responsible for their own prints.

Filament/material for prints will be provided by the Imaging Center. Users may not use their own filament without first clearing use with Imaging Center staff.
