AI Tools

Below is an updated list (as of August 2026) of AI tools, resources, and platforms available to campus users.

Adobe Firefly

Firefly is Adobe’s Gen AI toolkit that enables text-to-image generation, creative image editing, and text effects. Built into Adobe creative apps, it’s available on computers in campus labs.

Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is a suite of generative AI tools that Apple added to the Mac operating system as of OS 15.x (Sequoia). It is available to enable and use on college provided Apple Computers running Sequoia or Tahoe (26.x). AI features include:

  • Writing tools – Summarize text, proof your writing, and experiment with tone.
  • Image Playground – Create custom, AI-generated images.
  • Cleanup in Photos – Uses AI to cleanup or remove objects from photos.

Google Gemini

Google’s multimodal AI model, which can “understand and reason across different types of information including text, images, audio, video, and code.” Gemini is available for all Bates users from the Bates Google Workspace.

Google Classroom

Google’s Learning Management is available to Bates users. Various AI features and tools are available for use with Google Classroom. If you’d like a Google Classroom set up to support your class, please contact ats@groups.bates.edu.

Mentimeter

Bates has a site license for Mentimeter, an interactive presentation tool, which offers AI-powered features intended to save time and provide deeper insights into user responses. Faculty, staff, and students can sign in to the service and create Mentis.

Perusall

Perusall

Bates has an institutional license for Perusall, a social annotation platform. Several years before the advent of GenAI, Perusall developed AI-powered automated scoring that focuses on specific engagement metrics: time spent, number of comments, responses, upvotes, and completion.  (Perusall is available through Lyceum).

Ollama

Ollama is a freely available, open source application that allows you to run LLM’s locally on your computer for experimentation and testing. (Installed and available for use and testing in Coram: please contact ats@groups.bates.edu for details on how to access).

OpenWebUI

OpenWebUI is a feature-rich, self-hosted graphical interface that runs as a web service on your computer. It mimics the look and feel of a chatbot but allows you interact with local and cloud-based AI models privartely and indepdently on your own hardware.
