Bates seeks to advance excellence in teaching and research, and provides support for faculty throughout their careers, including teaching development programs, leaves and sabbaticals, research and curriculum development, and securing external funding for faculty scholarship.
Funding
There are many opportunities for Bates faculty to seek funding internally for research and scholarship or assistance with writing and/or managing existing external grants. Funds for conference travel and bringing scholars from other institutions to campus are also available.

Faculty Recognition
Faculty Recognition Program. The Dean of Faculty’s Office recognizes and celebrates outstanding teaching and scholarship at meaningful moments in the career of faculty members: promotion, tenure, and retirement.

The Accomplishments, Contributions, and Engagements (ACE) Annual Report contributes to our perspective on the scholarly, teaching, and service accomplishments of the faculty that we share with our colleagues, the trustees, and others. Submit your ACE reports here.

SCARAB
SCARAB (Scholarly Communication and Research at Bates) is the Bates institutional repository for scholarly and creative works produced by faculty, students and staff. The open-access repository is sponsored and administered by Information and Library Services and faculty are encouraged to add their scholarship.
Travel
Travel to Conferences. The Dean of Faculty encourages travel to conferences for faculty in support of scholarship and offers partial support for travel costs associated with professional activity.
Travel Funds for Instructional Specialists. Bates supports Assistants in Instruction with travel funding to academic workshops and conferences to support professional development. Details and Application
Traveling with Family. The Dean of Faculty understands that in some circumstances faculty and staff may wish to ask family members or partners to join them on an official Bates trip. See guidelines for Traveling with Family Members
