Bates seeks to advance excellence in teaching and research, and provides support for faculty throughout their careers, including teaching development programs, leaves and sabbaticals, research and curriculum development, and securing external funding for faculty scholarship.

There are many opportunities for Bates faculty to seek funding internally for research and scholarship or assistance with writing and/or managing existing external grants. Funds for conference travel and bringing scholars from other institutions to campus are also available.

SCARAB

• SCARAB (Scholarly Communication and Research at Bates) is the Bates institutional repository for scholarly and creative works produced by faculty, students and staff. The open-access repository is sponsored and administered by Information and Library Services and faculty are encouraged to add their scholarship.

Travel

• Travel to Conferences – The Dean of Faculty encourages conference attendance for faculty in support of scholarship and offers partial support for travel costs associated with professional activity.
• Travel Funds for Instructional Specialists.
• Traveling with Family. The Dean of Faculty understands that in some circumstances faculty and staff may wish to ask family members or partners to join them on an official Bates trip.

Workload

• Course Reductions – Faculty may request course reductions or non-sabbatical leaves of absence under limited specific circumstances.
