This Short Term course will explore aspects of education in Zambia, focusing on the rural area of Kaoma in the Western Province, an under-resourced province with a comparatively low Human Development Index based on income, educational opportunities, and life expectancy. In partnership with the nonprofit WISE-Zambia, whose overarching goal is “Empowerment through Education” (https://wisezambia.org/), Bates students will have the opportunity to engage directly with children and youth through Community Engaged Learning experiences. Bates students will collaborate with secondary students in Zambia to develop materials and activities for WISE’s new STEAM center; provide tutoring for secondary school students; and engage in literacy activities with primary children in outlying villages. Students will have an opportunity to visit schools in the area and to learn about Zambian history and culture, particularly in relation to education. Topics of exploration include colonial and post-colonial impact on the region and country; an understanding of historical and current politics and economics; and participation in cultural norms and activities, including a visit to Livingstone, Mosi-oa-Tunya (Victoria) Falls, and a safari.
