How do I send a message to a my advisees?

To send an E-mail message to your advisees, type the list name at the "Send the message to:" or "To:" prompt in your E-mail program.

How do I know the list name?

There are two types of advisor E-mail distribution lists: undergraduate advisees (ung) and major advisees (mjr). List names are created by concatinating the advisor type abbreviation and the advisor's user name followed by @lists.bates.edu. Using David Haines as an example, his undergraduate advisee list name would be ungdhaines and his major advisee list name would be mjrdhaines@lists.bates.edu. As with the other lists, case does not matter.

Can I send a message from an account other than my Bates account?

No. Only list members may post to the list. You must send to these lists from your Bates email account so you are recognized as a member of the list. If you try to send mail, from a yahoo, hotmail or AOL account for example, the system will not accept it.

Who will receive my message?

The advisor e-mail lists include all active students' names (students attending Bates or on approved study away programs, NOT leaves) in alphabetical order, e-mail addresses and class years.

Who will receive my message when I reply to a message?

If a message was sent from a list and you use the reply option, your reply will go to everyone on the list. If you wish to reply only to the person who initiated the message, direct your message to that individual's E-mail address.

How do I get a list of the individuals on a specific list?

Send a mail message to classdomo@lists.bates.edu. In the message (not the subject line) put one line: who list-name where listname is the name of the your advisee list (e.g. who ungdhaines).

How do I save messages I want to keep?

Each member of the list is responsible for saving any message they wish to keep. There is a finite amount of space in the incoming mailbox directory, so messages should not be kept in your incoming mailbox but saved in a folder as you would other E-mail messages.

How does a student get on or off my advisee list?

These lists are generated nightly from information in the Registrar's database. If one of your advisees is not on your list, the student is not properly coded in the Banner database. The student needs to submit a change of advisor form to the Registrar and Student Financial Services office in Libbey Forum. Once this form has been processed, the student's name will be added to the list by the next day. Please direct questions regarding the adding or deleting of staff names on the list to Sarah Bernard (sbernard) in Information Services.
